New to Riding Lessons? Here's What You Need to Know

The short version, before your first lesson.

  • Find the right barn first. Look for an instructor who works with adult beginners and quiet, experienced lesson horses. Visit before you book.
  • Wear the right things. Long pants, boots with a heel, a fitted top, and an ASTM-certified helmet. Skip sneakers and shorts.
  • Expect to be sore. Riding works your core, legs and balance more than people expect.
  • Give it time. Most adult beginners are walking and trotting with control within a few months of weekly lessons.
  • Being nervous is normal. A good instructor and a good horse will meet you where you are.
